Types of BLDC MOTOR(Robot Vacuum Cleaner)

Inner Rotor Design

In an inner rotor design, the rotor is located in the centre of the motor and the stator winding surround the rotor. As the rotor is located in the core, rotor magnets do not insulate heat inside and heat get dissipated easily. Due to this reason, inner rotor designed motor produces a large amount of torque and validly used.

Outer Rotor Design

In outer rotor design, the rotor surrounds the winding which is located in the core of the motor. The magnets in the rotor trap the heat of the motor inside and do not allow to dissipate from the motor. Such type of designed motor operates at lower rated current and has low cogging torque.

Components of BLDC MOTOR(Robot Vacuum Cleaner)

Rotor
The rotor is the rotating part of the motor that contains permanent magnets. These magnets create a magnetic field that interacts with the stator's magnetic field to generate rotation.

Stator
The stator is the stationary part of the motor and contains coils of wire that create a magnetic field when current flows through them. The interaction between the stator's magnetic field and the rotor's magnetic field causes the rotor to turn.

Hall Effect Sensors
These sensors are typically placed within the stator and detect the position of the rotor's magnetic field. The information from these sensors is used to determine when to switch the current flow to different stator coils, effectively controlling the rotation of the motor.

Control Circuitry
The control circuitry of a BLDC motor includes electronic components such as transistors, diodes, and microcontrollers. These components manage the timing and sequence of current flow through the stator coils based on the signals from the Hall Effect sensors.

Types of BLDC Motors
There are several types of BLDC motors, and they can be categorized based on their construction and application:

● Outrunner Motors
In outrunner BLDC motors, the rotor surrounds the stator. These motors tend to have higher torque and are often used in applications like RC vehicles and drones.

● Inrunner Motors
In inrunner BLDC motors, the stator is located inside the rotor. These motors typically offer higher speed and are commonly used in applications like industrial machinery and electric vehicles.

● Axial Flux Motors
Axial flux BLDC motors have a unique design where the magnetic flux flows parallel to the axis of rotation. These motors are known for their compactness and high power density.

Control Methods of BLDC Motor(Robot Vacuum Cleaner)

Square-wave Control
Square-wave control uses Hall sensor or sensorless estimation algorithm to obtain the position of the motor rotor, and then commutates six times in the 360° electrical cycle according to the position of the rotor (commutate per 60°). The motor outputs a specific direction force at each commutation position, so it can be said that positional accuracy of the square-wave control is electrical 60°. In this control method, the phase current waveform of the motor approaches the square wave, so it is called square-wave control.

Sine Wave Control
Sine wave control uses the SVPWM wave and outputs the three-phase sine-wave voltage, corresponding current is sinusoidal current. In such a control mode, there’s no concept of commutation as the square-wave control, nor it thinks that infinite commutations have been occurred in an electric cycle. Obviously, sine wave control has smaller torque ripple and less current harmonics than the square-wave control, its control is more "exquisite". However, it has higher performance requirements for controller than the square-wave control, the motor efficiency can not be maximum.

FOC Control
Sine wave control realizes the control of voltage vector and indirectly realizes the current control, but it can not control the direction of current. FOC control can be regarded as an upgraded sine wave control, it realizes the control of current vector, namely realizing the vector control of motor’s stator magnetic field.

How to Maintain BLDC MOTOR(Robot Vacuum Cleaner)

Keep motor clean

Regular clean the motor to remove any dust, dirt, or debris that may accumulate on the surfaces. This can be done using a soft brush, compressed air, or a dry cloth.

Check for loose connections

Inspect the motor's wiring and connectors for any loose or damaged connections. Ensure that all the connections are secure and tight.

Lubrication

Some brushless motors may require lubrication for the bearings to ensure smooth operation. Consult the motor's manufacturer guidelines to determine if lubrication is necessary and use the recommended lubricant if needed.

Monitor motor temperatures

Keep an eye on the operating temperatures of the motor. Excessive heat can lead to motor failure. Ensure proper ventilation and cooling of the motor, and consider adding additional cooling if required.

FAQ

Q: What is the maintenance of BLDC motor?

A: Due to the lack of brushes or a commutator, there is nothing to replace within a Brushless DC Motor, making it extremely low maintenance. The only requirement is that the motor be run within proper specifications, and in a clean environment to ensure it does not overheat or result in system failure.

Q: Do brushless motors need maintenance?

A: Brushless motors will also require maintenance, especially on their bearings, but they don't require as much maintenance as brushed motors.Properly maintained brushless motors can operate for 10,000 hours or more. That's over a year of continual operation. Brushless motors last significantly longer than brushed DC motors. Removing the brushes eliminates friction, sparking, and excessive heat.

Q: How to maintain a brushless RC motor?

A: Take your motor apart and lay the parts out in front of you. Just like a brushed motor, dirt and grime can build up inside the can of a brushless motor, so clean both the rotating parts and the can itself. Spray the can with motor spray and allow it to dry before reassembly. Wipe down the armature as well.

Q: How long can a BLDC motor run continuously?

A: Some brushless DC motors can run continuously for tens of thousands of hours with proper maintenance and good operating conditions. However, factors such as temperature, voltage, current, and ambient conditions can affect the longevity of the motor.

Q: How can I increase my BLDC motor efficiency?

A: Using permanent magnets in the rotor helps keep BLDC motor and PMSMrotors small and inertias low. More significantly, the motors have lesselectrical losses than induction motors because they do not have thesecondary windings in their rotors, and the rotor magnetic losses arealso much lower.

Q: What is the problem with BLDC motor?

A: Electronic issues, air circulation problems, motor failure, and noise are some problems with BLDC fans. However, you can overcome these problems by choosing a reputed BLDC fan manufacturer providing at least a 2+1 year warranty on the fan.

Q: How do you test a BLDC motor?

A: Before testing the DC brushless motor, prepare a multimeter, check whether the multimeter is available, and then adjust it to the appropriate gear. First of all, use a multimeter to measure whether the three phases of UV, UW and VW are all on. If there is a DC resistance path reaction, there is no disconnection.

Q: Do brushless motors lose power over time?

A: The brushes wear out in brushed motors and their performance decreases until they stop working, but brushless motors have fewer parts in contact and thus don't wear out nearly as fast. For these DC 2 pole rotor, 3 stator phase brushless motors we use, the MAXIMUM safe, and useable timing is 60 degrees total, including the timing on the motor AND all the timing you set in the ESC (including Turbo and the other special additions to the timing total).

Q: What is the maximum rpm of a BLDC motor?

A: The unique design of a BLDC motor allows for several key benefits: Diameters as small as 12.7 mm. Speeds up to 100,000 rpm. High motion efficiency. In the brushless motor, the permanent magnet enters the air gap roughly along the radial direction, and generates radial force on the stator and rotor, thus causing electromagnetic vibration and noise.

Q: How to cool a BLDC motor?

A: Cooling System For the effectiveness of BLDC motor cooling in order to produce high efficiency, a cooling system using liquid (liquid cooling) is determined. Furthermore, the coolant is cooled by outside air using a radiator.

Q: How slow can a BLDC motor run?

A: A brushless DC motor can be operated as a stepper motor. Operating stepwise, it can operate as slowly as you want. Smooth operation would be more difficult. Determining that would probably require a simulation with complete characterization of the motor, controller and load.

Q: How do you slow down a BLDC motor?

A: The addition of a controller allows for a change in voltage. If the controller reduces the amount of voltage used to energize the engine, it will slow down. Concurrently, if the voltage is increased the motor will speed up.In fact, brushless motors are water resistant, but they are not really waterproof. Water is not pure in lakes or puddles or even in rain. Small particles can find their way into the bearings of brushless motors from the water itself.

Q: What is the life expectancy of a BLDC motor?

A: However, with proper care and maintenance, a brushed DC motor can last even longer, up to 100,000 hours or more. Factors that can affect the lifespan of a brushed DC motor include: Overheating: Excessive heat can cause damage to the motor's commutator and brushes, reducing its lifespan.

Q: What is the most common failure on a brushless DC motor?

A: Common problems with brushless motors include Overheating, Power loss, Difficulty starting or controlling the motor, Failure due to wear and tear, and Short circuits. If you have determined that the motor is damaged, you can attempt to repair it. If the motor's coils are damaged, you can try to replace the coils. If the motor's bearings are damaged, you can try to replace the bearings.

Q: How can I improve my BLDC motor?

A: Optimization of a Brushless DC motor for high speed applications. The coils are wound within the slots. Magnetic induction in the lamination is pretty high since the air gap between the laminations (stator) and magnet is small. Therefore, we can use a small magnet diameter.

Q: Why BLDC is not used in EV?

A: BLDC motors are very efficient for electric vehicle applications. The requirement of a permanent magnet in a BLDC motor is of concern as availability of the magnet is very uncertain. As a result, researchers are looking for use of other motors such as SRM.

Q: How to troubleshoot a brushless motor?

A: Check for short circuits between the stator and the windings. Look for any connection between the windings and the motor stator laminations. You will need to find bare metal on the stator for one connection to the meter and on the meter windings for the other.

Q: Can you lubricate a brushless motor?

A: It's true that we don't have to lubricate brushless motors with ball bearings. Ball bearings are sealed with grease inside, so applying oil doesn't really help much but actually could be counter-productive as well as making a mess because oil will attract dusts and dirt.

Q: Are BLDC motors reliable?

A: In industries such as automotive where reliability is important, BLDC motors offer low maintenance needs and long operational lifespan which ensures vehicles spend less time in maintenance and repair and remain operational for longer periods.

Q: How long can a BLDC motor run continuously?

A: Some brushless DC motors can run continuously for tens of thousands of hours with proper maintenance and good operating conditions. However, factors such as temperature, voltage, current, and ambient conditions can affect the longevity of the motor.
